Rick's Near Beer
Approachable, enjoyable beer without the alcohol and calories. And yet: It's still beer.
The NA (non-alchoholic) beer and spirits industry is growing fast, with interesting new entries to the space every month, it seems.
Enter Rick’s Near Beer, an Austin-based company from beer-brewing veteran Josh Hare. Josh is the man behind the excellent Hops & Grain craft beer brand, which for over 10 years has been nourishing beer drinkers with “real” quality brews in Texas and beyond.
Rick’s is planting it’s NA flag in the approachabilty space, offering working man’s cans with an aesthetic that says “I’m here for you by the sawmill” rather than “Sip me after the Ted Talk.” And, it works.
And it’s real beer, by the way. It’s simply had the alchohol removed, leaving it with 0.5% ABV. Rick’s beers come to Texas via Denver, Colorado where they’re brewed using premium malted barley, fine American hops, and water from the Rocky Mountains, which are silhouetted on the handsome cans.
Two flavors are available out of the gate: Original, a Pilsner; and Hazy, which is their take on an IPA.
Both flavors provide the joy of drinking a well-crafted beer, but of coure without the alcohol and with much fewer calories. A can of Rick’s Original is a mere 55 calories; a Hazy, 61.
There’s no Rick, if you’re wondering. The “Rick” in Rick’s is a metaphor for the laid back kind of guy who would drink Rick’s, and who you’d want to drink a Rick’s with.
